Fashion, Growth and Welfare: An Evolutionary Approach

چکیده
The task of this paper is to explore the interplay between fashion, consumer lifestyles and economic growth in the context of a world of technological change in which the menu of possibilities that consumers face is constantly changing and tending to increase in length. Our working definition of ‘fashion’ is simple, namely the tendency or behavioral norm of actors to adopt certain types or styles of customs or commodities nearly simultaneously, only to adopt a different type or style of custom or commodity in future periods. The demand spikes associated with fashion may pertain to newly introduced products or to products that have been around for some time; they may also occur in hybrid cases where a seemingly defunct product or genre is given a brief rebirth by being reincarnated in terms of a new technology. Clearly, this is not a place for equilibrium analysis of the orthodox kind in which all that consumers are adjusting to are relative price changes and changes in their life-cycle stage that affect what they wish to consume. We need to understand how consumers cope with the problem of choice in the face of such changes, and how their preferences change endogenously. A better understanding

Casting a chronological glance at the trend of studies in the evolutionary economics area suffices to come to the point that the approach enjoys a long historical background. It is to say that the studies conducted in this area consist of miscellaneous thoughts ranging from insight of early Marxists to Austrian neo-liberalists. Nevertheless, a landmark study that paved the way for the developme...

This paper implements an approach to examine economic problems in which rational agents interact in dynamic markets. We use evolutionary game theory and agent-based modeling in tandem as a means to address intertemporal problems that display evolutionary attributes. This study examines the behavior of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in the global oil markets during the ...
متن کاملDynamic Categorization of Semantics of Fashion Language: A Memetic Approach
Categories are not invariant. This paper attempts to explore the dynamic nature of semantic category, in particular, that of fashion language, based on the cognitive theory of Dawkins’ memetics, a new theory of cultural evolution. Semantic attributes of linguistic memes decrease or proliferate in replication and spreading, which involves a dynamic development of semantic category. More specific...
متن کاملAn Analysis the Effect of Capital Taxation on Allocation of Resources: A Dynamic Equilibrium Model Approach
Abstract T he return of capital is fundamental to the intertemporal allocation of resources by changing the consumption behavior and capital accumulation over time. Taxation on return of capital increases the marginal product of capital, meaning that capital stock is lower than when capital is not taxed, which results decreased growth and welfare in steady state. This pape...
متن کاملA hybridization of evolutionary fuzzy systems and ant Colony optimization for intrusion detection
A hybrid approach for intrusion detection in computer networks is presented in this paper. The proposed approach combines an evolutionary-based fuzzy system with an Ant Colony Optimization procedure to generate high-quality fuzzy-classification rules. We applied our hybrid learning approach to network security and validated it using the DARPA KDD-Cup99 benchmark data set. The results indicate t...
